City of Hope appoints chair of hematology and hematopoietic cell transplantation

Eileen Smith, MD, has been appointed chair of the department of hematology and hematopoietic cell transplantation at City of Hope.
Smith — medical director of City of Hope’s Alpha Stem Cell Clinic, associate director of the clinical research program, and clinical professor in the department of hematology and hematopoietic cell transplantation — will provide oversight of all clinical treatments to improve outcomes for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome and other hematologic conditions.
Smith's research interest is in Hodgkin lymphoma. She joined City of Hope nearly 3 decades ago as the inaugural fellow in bone marrow transplantation. Smith later served as director of the hematopoietic stem cell transplant program at University of Wisconsin before returning to City of Hope in 2003.
She will succeed Stephen J. Forman, MD, who has served as chair of the department for more than 30 years.
Forman — recognized for his expertise in leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow transplantation and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy — will continue to serve as director of the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute and director of the T-cell therapeutics research laboratory.
