ASH presents Scholar Awards to fellows, junior faculty

ASH announced the 39 recipients of the society's 2019 Scholar Awards.
The awards — presented to hematologists in the United States and Canada who conduct basic, translational or clinical research — provide $100,000 to $150,000 to fellow or junior faculty over a 2- to 3-year period.
The support is intended to help individuals dedicated to careers in hematology research as they transition from training programs to careers as independent investigators.
“For many scientists, attaining early funding for their research is a turning point, not only providing financial support but also showing that ASH believes in their potential to make impactful discoveries,” ASH President Stephanie Lee, MD, MPH, hematologist and transplant physician-scientist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, said in a press release. “For more than 30 years now, ASH has been supporting fellows and early career faculty with Scholar Awards. Recipients of these prestigious awards have gone on to distinguished careers, receiving more than $1 billion from various funding institutions and becoming leaders in our field.”
Recipients in the Basic/Translational Fellow category were: Benjamin Barwick, PhD, of Emory University; Theodore Braun, MD, PhD, of Oregon Health & Science University; Federico Gaiti, PhD, of Weill Cornell Medicine; Oluwabukola Gbotosho, PhD, of University of Pittsburgh; Robert Lee, PhD, of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Hojun Li, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; Stephanie Luff, PhD, of University of Washington; Satish Nandakumar, PhD, of Boston Children's Hospital; Abhishek Singh, PhD, of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center; Alexandra Soukup, PhD, of University of Wisconsin; Julia Warren, MD, PhD, of University of Washington; Seongseok Yun, MD, PhD, of Moffitt Cancer Center; and Patricia Zerra, MD, of Emory University.
Recipients in the Basic/Translational Fellow to Faculty category were: Annamaria Gulla, MD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; Rossella Marullo, MD, PhD, of Weill Cornell Medicine; Idit Sagiv-Barfi, PhD, of Stanford University; Amanda Smith, PhD, of University of Washington; Erica Sparkenbaugh, PhD, of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Anastasia Tikhonova, PhD, of New York University School of Medicine; and Ly Vu, PhD, of Simon Fraser University.
Recipients in the Basic/Translational Junior Faculty category were: Michalis Agathocleous, PhD, of UT Southwestern Medical Center; Wendy Beguelin, PhD, of Weill Cornell Medicine; Stephen Chung, MD, of UT Southwestern Medical Center; Shannon Elf, PhD, of The University of Chicago; Hongxia Fu, PhD, of University of Washington; Siddhartha Jaiswal, MD, PhD, of Stanford University; Kellie Machlus, PhD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital; Anjali Mishra, PhD, of Thomas Jefferson University; and Andrew Yee, PhD, of Baylor College of Medicine.
Recipients in the Clinical Fellow category were: Hanny Al-Samkari, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital; Francesco Maura, MD, of Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research; Karolyn Oetjen, MD, PhD, of University of Washington; and Akshay Sharma, MBBS, of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The lone recipient in the Clinical Fellow to Faculty category was Lena Winestone, MD, of University of California, San Francisco.
Recipients in the Clinical Junior Faculty category were: David Bartlett, PhD, of Duke University; Patrick McGann, MD, of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center; Rakhi Naik, MD, of Johns Hopkins University; Jacquelyn Powers, MD, of Baylor College of Medicine; and Deborah Siegal, MD, of McMaster University.
