City of Hope faculty members receive award for excellence in genetics education

The American Society of Human Genetics presented the Arno Motulsky-Barton Childs Award for Excellence in Human Genetics Education to two faculty members from City of Hope.
Jeffrey N. Weitzel, MD, and Kathleen Blazer, EDD, MS, LCGC, received the award Oct. 15 during the society’s annual meeting in Houston.
Weitzel is chief of the division of clinical cancer genomics, as well as director of the cancer screening and prevention program at City of Hope. Blazer directs City of Hope’s cancer genomics education program.
Weitzel and Blazer have worked together for more than 20 years to provide cancer genomics education to researchers and clinicians around the world.
Their NCI-funded cancer genomics education initiatives have included preparing master’s and doctoral clinicians for leadership in translational cancer genomics research, as well as educating primary care physicians for referral-level competence. They also have provided workshops and conferences for high-risk patients and their families.
