Carolyn Menendez, MD, FACS, has been appointed director of Duke Cancer Institute’s clinical cancer genetics program.
Menendez — assistant professor of surgical oncology at Duke — will provide oversight, strategy and leadership for the Hereditary Cancer Clinic, which provides risk assessment and education to individuals with cancer or those at high risk due to family history or other factors.
“In the next phase of the clinical cancer genetics program, we will increase multidisciplinary engagement,” Menendez said in a press release. “This will begin with the expansion of case conferences to include thought leaders in all specialties involved in cancer care and high-risk surveillance and research projects.”
She also hopes to expand patient access across the Duke health system to reduce barriers to quality genetic counseling and testing.
Menendez has been a practicing breast surgeon since 2004. She served as medical director of clinical cancer genetics with Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in North Carolina for 3 years before joining Duke in 2018.
