Microenvironment signatures show biological subtypes of DLBCL

ORLANDO — Leandro Cerchietti, MD, from the division of hematology & medical oncology, Weill Cornell Medicine, discussed his study on the tumor microenvironment in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a video interview at ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition.

Often neglected, the tumor microenvironment is the nonmalignant cells that surround the lymphoma cells, Cerchietti said. In their study, the investigators found four types of lymphoma microenvironments, which range from a more benign to a more malignant microenvironment.

“You can have a bad mutation with a good microenvironment – it’s a much better prognosis than having a bad mutation with a bad microenvironment,” Cerchietti said. “In the future, this study allows us to discover new targets for therapeutic intervention that are not in the malignant cell, but are in the tumor microenvironment cells as well.”
