ASTRO confers honorary member status to Penn oncologist

American Society for Radiation Oncology chose Corey J. Langer, MD, as its 2019 honorary member.
The award is the highest honor that ASTRO bestows upon cancer researchers and physicians who do not quality for active society membership.
Langer is professor of medicine in the hematology/oncology division at University of Pennsylvania, as well as director of thoracic oncology at Abramson Cancer Center. He previously led the thoracic oncology program at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Mitchell Machtay, MD, FASTRO, professor in the department of radiation oncology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and associate director for clinical research at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, nominated Langer for the award.
In his nomination, Machtay said he had never met a medical oncologist more passionate about combined-modality, curative-intent therapy for locally advanced lung cancer than Langer.
“There are only a small number of medical oncologists who have had great influence and contributions promoting combined-modality therapy; there are a fewer number of medical oncologists who have participated so heartily in the annual ASTRO meetings,” Machtay said in his nomination. “And there are no medical oncologists who have provided as much service to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group/NRG Oncology Cooperative Group and its prospective, radiation oncology oriented clinical trials as Dr. Langer has.”
Langer received the award during ASTRO Annual Meeting, held Sept. 15-18 in Chicago.
