University of Arizona Cancer Center appoints associate director for basic sciences

Joann Sweasy, PhD, has been appointed associate director for basic sciences at University of Arizona Cancer Center.
In this role, she will develop and promote research for the growth in cancer basic sciences. She also will ensure that basic sciences is integrated into the institution’s cancer biology, therapeutic development, cancer imaging, and cancer prevention and control programs.
“Dr. Sweasy brings a tremendous amount of scientific expertise in multiple fields and the ability to enhance both the growth and interaction among our four programs,” Andrew Kraft, MD, director of University of Arizona (UA) Cancer Center, said in a press release.
Sweasy also will hold a joint faculty position in the department of cellular and molecular medicine and the department of radiation oncology at University of Arizona College of Medicine — Tucson.
Sweasy previously served as associate director for basic sciences and co-leader of the radiobiology and radiotherapy program at Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Her research focuses on genomic instability and how it contributes to mutations that lead to cancer and other diseases. Her laboratory’s work has aimed to improve understanding of how single nucleotide polymorphisms found in DNA repair genes impact cancer risk and treatment.
“I look forward to working with the strong basic and translational scientists at the UA Cancer Center,” Sweasy said in a press release. “The UA Cancer Center offers significant opportunities to build teams and bring basic science to the bench side.”
