The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center ranked best cancer hospital in nation

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has retained its distinction as the No. 1 cancer hospital in the country.
MD Anderson tops U.S. News & World Report’s 2019-2020 Best Hospitals rankings for cancer care.
This is the fifth straight year — and the 15th time in 18 years — that MD Anderson has ranked first. The institution has finished first or second in cancer care every year since the publication began issuing its rankings in 1990.

"The No. 1 ranking carries with it the responsibility to be a leader in the cancer field, and we are continually striving for improvement."
Other hospitals ranked in the top 10 for cancer care are Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, Cleveland Clinic, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside in Pittsburgh, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Mayo Clinic ranked first in this year’s Honor Roll, which highlights 20 hospitals that deliver exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care. This is the fourth straight year Mayo Clinic topped the Honor Roll.

"Each day, we strive to bring hope and healing to our patients."
Other institutions in this year’s Honor Roll top five are Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
The 30th annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are intended to help patients with rare or life-threatening conditions make informed decisions about where to receive care.
The 2019-2020 rankings compare more than 4,500 medical centers across the country in 25 adult specialties, conditions and procedures. Only 165 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.
This year, U.S. News developed data-driven rankings for 12 specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology and lung surgery; and urology.
Best Hospitals rankings are based primarily on objective measures, such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, patient volume, patient safety and quality of nursing.
This year, the publication updated its methodology for its data-driven rankings by adding two patient-centered measures — a patient experience score, and an outcome measure that accounts for how often patients go home directly from the hospital rather than transitioning to a nursing home or other institutional care setting.
“In the three decades since U.S. News began evaluating hospitals, we periodically have revamped our measures to enhance the decision support our rankings and ratings provide to patients,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in a publication-issued press release. “This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals’ patient populations. The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families and their medical professionals.”
U.S. News & World Report began issuing a list of best children’s hospitals in 2007. In June, the publication named Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders as the best in the nation for children with cancer.
