University of Arizona Cancer Center appoints interim director

William Cance, MD, has been appointed interim director of University of Arizona Cancer Center.
Cance — a renowned oncology surgeon and physician-scientist who most recently served as the cancer center’s deputy director — will oversee clinical operations and research.
He also will lead the effort to renew the cancer center’s NCI Cancer Center Support Grant next year.
“Our major focus over the next year will be on the [grant] renewal,” Cance said in a press release. “Across our programs, we will have formal strategic planning, strategic programmatic development and will be hiring new faculty in essential roles. We will also strengthen our efforts to implement innovative approaches in clinical cancer care by translating scientific progress into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.”
Cance — who joined University of Arizona in October 2016 — also serves as professor in the departments of surgery, interdisciplinary oncology, and pharmacology and toxicology.
“Dr. Cance has made enormous strides in Phoenix and across the state to establish a culture of collaboration to advance cancer care and treatment,” Michael D. Dake, MD, the university’s senior vice president for health sciences, said in a press release. “His keen focus on collaboration will enhance programs, advance basic science, reduce disparities and elevate [University of Arizona Cancer Center’s] reputation for excellence in service to our state.”
Andrew Kraft, MD, who served as the cancer center’s director since September 2014, stepped down from that position but will continue to serve as associate director of research.
