CHICAGO — Debra Patt, MD, MPH, MBA, executive vice president of Texas Oncology and medical director of analytics for US Oncology Network and McKesson Specialty Health, spoke with HemOnc Today about how the introduction of the oncology care model has enhanced quality and increased value.

Use of treatment care plans and the advent of patient navigation in clinics have increased health literacy among patients, Patt said.

Advanced care planning discussions, introduction of biosimilars when appropriate, and dose rounding and dose banding for immunology drugs and have helped to control costs while still ensuring high levels of quality, she added.

The oncology care model also emphasizes the importance of financial counseling.

“Patients not only understand their treatment plan but also their out-of-pocket costs as they embark upon care delivery,” Patt told HemOnc Today. “This is helpful for them in managing their finances as they think about their cancer journey.” — by Mark Leiser
