John Sweetenham, MD, has been named associate director for clinical affairs at Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Sweetenham — HemOnc Today’s Chief Medical Editor for Hematology — currently serves as senior director of clinical affairs and executive medical director at Huntsman Cancer Institute at University of Utah.

He will start at UT Southwestern on April 15.

“This is such an exciting time to be joining an extraordinary organization, which blends its strength in incredible cancer research with exceptional patient-centered care,” Sweetenham told HemOnc Today. “I am looking forward to being part of a team focused on making advances in cancer care accessible to as many people as possible in North Texas and beyond.”

Sweetenham, who joined Huntsman Cancer Institute in April 2013, is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of hematologic malignancies. His central research interest is lymphoma and the use of stem cell transplantation.

He previously served as medical director at UC San Diego Nevada Cancer Institute. He also has held leadership positions at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center, University of Arizona and University of Colorado.

Sweetenham trained in medicine at St. Bartholomew and Royal London School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in medical oncology at University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, where he subsequently served as a faculty member and leader of the lymphoma and transplant programs. He completed his internship at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and his residency at Royal United Hospital in Bath, UK.

Sweetenham is former chairman of the Clinical Trials Committee of Leukemia and Lymphoma Research, UK. He previously served as a core committee member of the ECOG Lymphoma Committee.

“We are so thrilled and fortunate that John Sweetenham is joining the leadership of our cancer center,” Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, director of Simmons Cancer Center and associate dean of oncology programs at UT Southwestern, told HemOnc Today. “His transformative vision and executive experience will be essential for continuing and perfecting the implementation of exceptional care of cancer patients in North Texas, while ensuring they also benefit from the latest advances in clinical trials and cancer discoveries.” – by Mark Leiser
