Mount Sinai thoracic surgeon receives award

Raja M. Flores, MD, received New York University’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award, which recognizes his accomplishments and services to the institution as both a student and alumnus.
Flores is founding chairman of the department of thoracic surgery at Mount Sinai Health System, as well as Steven and Ann Ames professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
He is recognized for his work in lug cancer, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases. He established video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy as the standard in surgical treatment of lung cancer.
Flores attended NYU from 1984 to 1988, receiving a full scholarship through the Higher Education Opportunity Program.
He continues to give back to NYU, providing guidance to medical students and giving them opportunities to shadow him in the operating room. He also funds scholarships.
“I was very humbled to receive this award because I’m the one who feels like I owe so much to NYU for giving me the opportunity to live out my dreams,” Flores said in a press release. “I am honored to receive this award and grateful for the opportunities I received. The scholarship helped me achieve my dreams and I’m happy to give back.”
