CAR T-cell therapy pioneer Carl H. June, MD, awarded 2019 Harrington Prize

The American Society for Clinical Investigation has recognized Carl H. June, MD, as the recipient of its sixth annual Harrington Prize in Innovation.
The prize recognizes a physician-scientist who has advanced scientific innovation, creativity and possible clinical applications.
The award will be presented today during the AAP/ASCI/APSA Joint Meeting in Chicago, where June will give the Harrington Prize lecture. He will also receive a $20,000 honorarium and speak at the Harrington Discovery Institute’s scientific symposium May 23.
June is receiving the award for his pioneering work developing CAR T-cell therapy for the treatment of cancer and its clinical use.
“Dr. June’s extraordinary vision and dedication have helped to make the promise of cell engineering a therapeutic reality while fundamentally changing the way we treat [patients with] cancer,” Kieren Marr, MD, MBA, professor of medicine and oncology at Johns Hopkins and president of the ASCI, said in a press release. “In this exciting and evolving field, built on many brilliant discoveries, his work on immune cell regulation and development of robust T-cell culture systems make him an outstanding choice.”
June is the Richard W. Vague professor in immunotherapy in the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, where he serves as the director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies and director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
“We are thrilled to join the ASCI in honoring Dr. June and his team’s remarkable achievements, which represent a new paradigm for treating cancer,” Jonathan Stamler, MD, president of the Harrington Discovery Institute and chair in cardiovascular innovation at UH Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, said in the release. “Dr. June is a true luminary whose work promises enormous impact on human health.”
