Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association honors 2019 fellows
FORT WORTH, Texas — Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association honored the eight members of its 2019 fellows class during the opening ceremony of HOPA Ahead 2019, the organization’s annual conference.
Inductees are:
• Val Adams, PharmD, BCOP, FCCP — Adams is associate professor in the department of pharmacy practice and science in the College of Pharmacy at University of Kentucky. He co-chairs the protocol review and monitoring committee for NCI-designated Markey Cancer Center. He also is director of the hematology/oncology residency program and has trained more than 40 residents while maintaining an active research program. He has been at University of Kentucky since 1996. He has served on many HOPA committees and is a past president of the association.
• David DeRemer, PharmD, BCOP, FCCP — DeRemer is clinical associate professor in the department of pharmacology and translational research at University of Florida College of Pharmacy. He received his bachelor of science and PharmD degrees from University of Kentucky, where he also completed an oncology residency and fellowship. His areas of interest include cancer genetics, supportive care in oncology, and biomarker assessment in clinical trials of novel therapeutics. DeRemer has been active in HOPA since 2006 and will serve as the association’s president-elect for the next year.
• Patrick Kiel, PharmD, BCOP, BCPS — Kiel is a clinical pharmacy specialist at Indiana University Simon Cancer Center, where he provides clinical services for the hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplant programs. He also is part of the cancer center’s precision genomics program. He received his doctor of pharmacy degree from Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Pharmacy. He completed residencies at Rush University Medical Center and Indiana University Hospital. He has been active in HOPA for several years, serving on the research committee, as well as the basic and translational science committee.
• Jill Rhodes, PharmD, BCOP — Rhodes is a pharmacy specialist at the University of Louisville Hospital and is chief operating officer for St. Matthews Community and Specialty Pharmacy. She completed residency at University of Kentucky and is director of the PGY2 oncology residency program at University of Louisville. She has precepted more than 20 PGY1 and PGY2 residents, as well as 40 students. She has served on HOPA’s board of directors, having volunteered for the program planning, BCOP oversight and patient outreach committees. She is an advocate for patient practice advancement and patient access to services. She provides pharmacy services in the community, including the implementation of a pharmacist-led, board-approved protocol for medication-assisted treatment of opioid use disorder.
• Rowena Schwartz, PharmD, BCOP — Schwartz is an oncology pharmacist and faculty member at University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy, with a clinical practice at Barrett Cancer Center. She aids participation in phase 1 clinical trials. She received her bachelor of science degree from University of Illinois and a doctor of pharmacy from The University of Texas, where she completed a fellowship in oncology drug development. She started her career at University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. She also served as director of oncology pharmacy services at Johns Hopkins Hospital and went on to work at US Oncology Network as vice president of clinical content and pharmacy operations at McKesson Specialty Health. She is past president of HOPA.
• Judith Smith, PharmD, BCOP, CPHQ, FCCP, FISOPP — Smith is associate professor in department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at The University of Texas Health McGovern Medical School. She also is director of the women’s health integrative medicine research program, as well as an oncology clinical pharmacy specialist at The University of Texas Health Memorial Hermann Cancer Center. She received her bachelor’s and PharmD degrees from Union University Albany College of Pharmacy. She completed residencies at NIH, followed by a fellowship in clinical pharmacology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
• Scott Soefje, PharmD, MBA, BCOP, FCCP — Soefje is director of pharmacy cancer care services at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from The University of Texas at Austin. After nearly 5 years of hospital practice, he earned his PharmD from the joint program at The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. He completed an oncology residency from Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital, followed by a clinical pharmacology fellowship at MD Anderson. He received his MBA with a focus on health care from George Washington University. He is a fellow of American College of Clinical Pharmacy. He is past president of the HOPA board and served on various other task forces and committees.
• Steve Stricker, PharmD, MS, BCOP — Stricker is senior medical and science liaison and associate director of U.S. medical affairs for Takeda Oncology. He received his doctor of pharmacy from University of Missouri. He completed a pharmacy residency at The University of North Carolina and an oncology residency at Emory Healthcare. He has held several leadership and advisory positions within HOPA. He is the author of more than 75 manuscripts and textbook chapters. He received HOPA’s New Practitioner Award in 2013. – by Mark Leiser
