Roy L. Silverstein, MD, has started his year-long term as president of ASH.
Silverstein — who will serve in that position through December — is chairman of the department of medicine at Medical College of Wisconsin. He also serves as associate director of MCW Cancer Center and senior investigator for Blood Research Institute at BloodCenter of Wisconsin.
He is recognized for his expertise in platelet and vascular cell biology, as well as clinical nonmalignant hematology and thrombosis.
“Hematology is an exciting and rapidly moving discipline driven by research, innovation and creative thinking in the clinic and in the laboratory,” Silverstein said in an ASH-issued press release. “I am delighted to serve as a leader of the organization that continues to move this field forward.”
Silverstein said he hopes to engage ASH members to evaluate hematology training programs and “develop innovative pathways to accelerate successful entry of clinicians and researchers” into careers in hematology.
“Moreover, I am ready to represent ASH members as a forceful advocate for continuing public investments in hematology research and in support of hematology training and practice,” Silverstein said.
Silverstein previously served as editor-in-chief of The Hematologist. He also served as chair of the society’s Committee on Government Affairs and co-chair of the 2012 ASH Annual Meeting scientific program.
