ASH to honor several leaders in hematology

Several leaders in hematology will be honored through awards and special lectures at ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, scheduled for Dec. 1-4 in San Diego.

Victor Hoffbrand, DM, FRCP, FMed Sci, of University College London will receive the Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology. The award recognizes Hoffbrand’s contributions to hematology in research, patient care and education throughout his 55-year career.

Alan D. D’Andrea, MD, of Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Neal S. Young, MD, of NHLBI, will receive the Ernest Beutler Lecture and Prize, a two-part lectureship that recognizes major translational advances related to a single topic. D’Andrea and Young will be honored for their research contributions to the study of inherited and acquired bone marrow failure syndromes.

Ross L. Levine, MD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College, will receive the William Dameshek Prize, presented to an early- or midcareer hematologist who has made a recent outstanding contribution to hematology. Levine will be honored for his discoveries in leukemia and myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Connie J. Eaves, PhD, of BC Cancer and University of British Columbia, will receive the E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize, which recognizes pioneering research achievements in hematology that represent a paradigm shift or significant discovery in the field. Eaves will be honored for her contributions to the field of hematopoiesis and stem cell research.

Freda K. Stevenson, DPhil, of University of Southampton and Southampton University Hospitals, and Brunangelo Falini, MD, of University of Perugia and Institute of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, will receive the Henry M. Stratton Medal, which honors senior investigators who made contributions to basic and clinical/translational hematology research over several years.

John E. Dick, PhD, of University of Toronto, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and Reed E. Drews, MD, of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, will receive mentor awards for their sustained commitment to training and career development of early-career hematologists.

Cage S. Johnson, MD, of University of Southern California, and José A. López, MD, of University of Washington, will receive the ASH Award for Leadership in Promoting Diversity.
