ASCO to honor Stanford oncologist

Douglas W. Blayney, MD, FASCO, will receive the Joseph V. Simone Award and Lecture for Excellence in Quality and Safety in the Care of Patients with Cancer.
The award — presented by ASCO — recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the quality and safety of cancer care.
Blayney — medical oncologist and professor at Stanford University School of Medicine — will receive the award at the ASCO Quality Care Symposium, scheduled for Sept. 28-29 in Phoenix.
“Better, safer, cheaper. Each time we sit across the exam table with a cancer patient, we are freshly aware that each one deserves the best, safest and most accessible care,” Blayney said in a press release. “As individuals and physicians, we can’t lose sight of this goal, and as innovators and leaders of cancer care systems, we must have our eye on this prize.
“As the number of cancer survivors around the world continues to grow, we must create and maintain a high-quality cancer care system to support our patients from the beginning stages throughout their survivorship,” Blayney added. “I look forward to discussing these themes at this year’s Quality Care Symposium. It is my privilege to receive this honor named after a remarkable colleague whom we admire for prioritizing quality and safety his entire career.”
Blayney served as ASCO president from 2009 to 2010. During his tenure, he helped launch ASCO Quality Care Symposium, envisioned ASCO’s CancerLinQ initiative and served as co-author of the ASCO Value Framework.
He previously served as medical director of Stanford Cancer Center and Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Michigan. Before that, he worked as an oncologist and hematologist in private practice for 17 years.
“[Blayney] is a driving force for improving the quality of cancer care,” Monika K. Krzyzanowska, MD, MPH, chair of the Quality Care Symposium Program Committee, said in the release. “A dedicated oncologist whose career has been committed to delivering high-quality care to patients, [he] embodies the very essence of the Joseph V. Simone Award.”
