James C. Wittig, MD, will receive the Sarcoma Foundation of America’s Nobility in Science Award.

Wittig — vice chairman of orthopedic surgery, chief of orthopedic oncology, and director of the skin and sarcoma division at John Theurer Cancer Center — will receive the award during the foundation’s Stand Up to Sarcoma fundraising event on May 3 in New York.

The award is presented to an outstanding scientist who is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge of sarcoma and works to identify innovative treatment approaches.

“Our foundation applauds the work of Dr. Wittig and his team, which aligns perfectly with our mission to find a cure for sarcoma,” Richard Rumsey, CEO of Sarcoma Foundation of America, said in a press release. “Dr. Wittig's shared commitment to the highest-quality research, in addition to the compassion he brings to patients and their families during their treatment, is a rare combination inspiring so many to continue to take on the fight to end this rare disease.”

Wittig will be recognized for work that has focused on treating pediatric and adult patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas, as well as benign bone and soft tissue tumors and metastatic cancers. Wittig also has extensive experience in limb-sparing surgery.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be chosen for such a prestigious award. I would like to think it represents a significant contribution to the field of sarcoma, but I feel I have barely scratched the surface,” Witting said in the release. “Significant advancements can only be made through future scientific investigations and technological advances. I only hope that by receiving this award, I can continue to drive awareness and philanthropy to help develop new treatments, improve patients’ quality of life and effect a cure.”
