Mike Schmidt, a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer who played 17 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, received a stage III melanoma diagnosis in 2013.
The disease spread to his lymph nodes, lungs and brain.
Schmidt, 68, is now cancer free.
He decided to “pay it forward” by joining Your Cancer Game Plan, a Merck-led awareness campaign designed to help people with cancer and their loved ones cope with their health, emotional and communication needs.
Schmidt also has worked with the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation to add sunscreen dispensers around Citizens Bank Park — home of the Phillies — and elsewhere across Philadelphia.
In this video, Schmidt offers recommendations for sun protection, and he discusses initiatives with which he is involved to promote melanoma/skin cancer awareness and prevention.
