Khurshid Guru

Khurshid Guru, MD, has been named chairman of the department of urology at Roswell Park Cancer institute.

Guru, recruited to Roswell Park in 2005 to lead the institution’s robotic surgery program, has served as vice chair of the department of urology since April 2016. In his new role, he will lead a team of more than 50 faculty members, researchers, clinicians and staff members who care for patients with genitourinary diseases, including kidney, prostate and bladder cancers.

“Khurshid is one of the most creative and energetic people I’ve ever met,” Candace S. Johnson, PhD, president and CEO of Roswell Park, said in a press release. “In his work as a surgeon, educator, researcher, entrepreneur and volunteer, he always seems to blend the best of science and human compassion together. He will be an outstanding leader for this very dedicated team.”

Guru completed a fellowship in robot-assisted surgery under Mani Menon, MD, of Henry Ford Health System’s Vattikuti Urology Institute.

After completing this training, Guru performed one of the first robot-assisted radical cystectomies. He has performed more than 2,500 robot-assisted surgical procedures and, earlier this year, he performed his 500th robotic radical cystectomy.
