The American Society for Radiation Oncology has selected three 2017 ASTRO Gold Medalists.

The honorees — Søren M. Bentzen, DSc, PhD; Louis B. Harrison, MD, FASTRO; and Michael L. Steinberg, MD, FASTRO — will be recognized during an awards ceremony at the ASTRO Annual Meeting, which will be held Sept. 24-27 in San Diego.

ASTRO Gold Medals — the highest honor bestowed upon ASTRO members — are presented to individuals who made outstanding lifetime contributions in the field of radiation oncology. The honor, given to just 81 of the society’s 10,000-plus members, recognizes achievements in clinical patient care, research, teaching and service to the profession.

“It is a privilege to bestow the ASTRO Gold Medal upon these three great men, who have all contributed to the specialty in a myriad of ways,” David C. Beyer, MD, FASTRO, chair of ASTRO’s board of directors, said in a society-issued press release. “Honoring these colleagues is a highlight of my role as Board Chair, made even more so by the fact that they are selected for this highest accolade by their peers.”

Bentzen is professor in and director of the division of biostatistics and bioinformatics in the department of epidemiology and public health at University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also holds an appointment there as professor of radiation oncology, and he is a member of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Harrison serves as chair of radiation oncology and deputy physician-in-chief at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. Harrison — who specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancers — previously served as physician-in-chief of Continuum Cancer Centers of New York.

Steinberg has served as professor and chair of the department of radiation oncology at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA since 2008. Steinberg served as founding chair of ASTRO’s Health Policy Council, and he also served as ASTRO president and chairman of its board of directors.
