St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been named the best hospital in the nation for children with cancer.
The institution tops U.S. News & World Report’s list of best hospitals for pediatric cancer for 2017-2018.
"We are honored to know that U.S. News & World Report recognizes our commitment to integrating unsurpassed clinical care and innovative research to find cures and save children with cancer," James R. Downing, MD, St. Jude president and CEO, said in a press release. "This recognition is an outstanding external acknowledgment for our institution, but more importantly for the dedicated St. Jude faculty and staff who devote their time, talent and energy to the patients we care for every day."
The 11th annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are intended to help families of children with life-threatening or rare conditions obtain the best possible medical care.
The rankings highlight the top 50 centers in 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center — which had been the top hospital in the country for children with cancer the past 3 years — is ranked second in this year’s cancer-specific rankings. The institution has been either first or second for 7 consecutive years.
Boston Children’s also topped this year’s U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll, a list of pediatric centers that deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties. Boston Children’s ranked first in five of the 10 specialties assessed.
Other centers named to the top 10 for cancer care this year are Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Texas Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, Children’s National Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings take into account objective measurements, such as clinical outcomes, compliance with best practices, patient volume, infection control, adequacy of nurse staffing, and efficiency and coordination of care.
RTI International, a research and consulting firm in North Carolina, collected and analyzed data from children’s hospitals and also surveyed several thousand pediatric specialists.
“The ranked pediatric centers in Best Children’s Hospitals provide an extraordinarily high level of care and deserve to be recognized for their commitment,” Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor, said in a press release. “Children with life-threatening illnesses or rare conditions need the state-of-the-art services and expertise these hospitals deliver every day.”
