Robert J. Cerfolio, MD, has been named chief of clinical thoracic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Cerfolio also will serve as director of the new Lung Cancer Center at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center.

“I’m honored to join NYU Langone and its Perlmutter Cancer Center, and to be asked to be part of a team that brings together all elements of lung cancer care to provide the very best to our patients, many of whom are in the fight of their lives,” Cerfolio said in a press release. “We plan for innovative ways to serve patients in the New York tristate and those all over the world.”

As director of the lung cancer center, Cerfolio will lead nationally renowned surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pulmonologists and other specialists.

“Lung cancer is an insidious disease that is difficult to treat, especially when it progresses to more advanced stages,” Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, director of NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, said in the release. “Dr. Cerfolio will provide a new level of excellence to our rapidly expanding lung cancer program. Patients who turn to us can rest assured they will have access to the finest clinical care, the latest treatments and the most advanced cutting-edge research.”

Cerfolio, whose tenure will begin June 1, currently serves as chief of the section of thoracic oncology and James H. Estes endowed chair for lung cancer research at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.

He is recognized for developing a four-arm robotic approach designed to treat patients who need lung cancer excisions, removal of cancerous esophageal tumors and tumor resections within the thoracic region. His work has reduced complications, increased survival and shortened hospital stays.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Cerfolio to lead our clinical thoracic surgery division,” Aubrey C. Galloway, MD, Seymour Cohn professor and chair of the department of cardiothoracic surgery at NYU Langone, said in the release. “He has a proven track record of exceptional patient outcomes, and will strengthen our robust thoracic surgery and lung cancer programs with his extraordinary expertise in robotic thoracic surgery.”
