University of Pennsylvania professor named to NHLBI advisory council

Karen Glanz, PhD, MPH, professor of epidemiology and nursing at University of Pennsylvania, to the Advisory Council for the NHLBI.
Glanz — who also serves as director of Penn’s Center for Health Behavior Research — will serve a 4-year term.
Members of the council advise the HHS secretary, assistant secretary for health, director of NIH and director of the NHLBI on matters relating to the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of blood, blood vessel, heart and lung diseases. Members also advise on the use of blood and blood products, as well as the management of blood resources.
Glanz’s research has focused on cancer prevention and control, healthy eating, obesity prevention, chronic disease management and control, health communication technologies and reducing health disparities.
She is co-director of the UPenn Prevention Research Center, through which faculty from several disciplines and researchers from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia collaborate on investigations related to several topics, including cancer prevention, weight loss and the economic impact of clinical trials.
