Simeon’s appointment will take effect March 1. She will join NYU from University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she serves as director of the gastrointestinal oncology program.

“Dr. Simeone’s recruitment signifies the unwavering commitment of Perlmutter Cancer Center to transform the landscape of pancreatic cancer detection and treatment,” Dafna Bar-Sagi, PhD, vice dean for science and chief scientific officer at NYU Langone, said in a press release. “As a highly accomplished physician scientist, Dr. Simeone will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between what we learn in the lab and how we translate it to the bedside.”

Her laboratory efforts will focus on the investigation into molecular events important in pancreatic cancer development in hopes of identifying biomarkers that improve early detection and lead to new therapies that extend survival. In her role as associate director for translational research, she will strive to accelerate the progression of laboratory studies or research into all types of malignancies into clinical practice.

“With scientific advances in many areas of cancer biology and genomics, we have an unprecedented opportunity to drive those discoveries to have real impact in patients, even in lethal diseases like pancreatic cancer,” Simeone said in the press release. “It is our obligation to step up to that challenge, and I am eager to have that opportunity at NYU Langone.”
