American Cancer Society elects new board members, officers

The American Cancer Society announced the election of three new members to its board of directors.

They are Amit Kumar, PhD, executive chairman of ITUS Corporation, a cancer diagnostic company; Joseph M. Naylor, vice president of policy, government and public affairs for Chevron Corporation; and William D. Novelli, professor in McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.

“We are honored to welcome these three new distinguished members to the board of directors,” Arnold M. Baskies, MD, FACS, medical director at Virtua Health Systems in New Jersey and the board’s 2017 chairman, said in a press release. “The board of directors is comprised of talent, strength, and the commitment to continue to provide strong leadership to help impact our collective efforts to save more lives from cancer.”

The society also announced its other board officers for 2017.

Kevin J. Cullen, MD, director at University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, will serve as vice chairman. Lewis E. Foxhall, MD, vice president for health policy and professor of clinical cancer prevention at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, will serve as board scientific officer; John Alfonso, CPA, CGMA, partner in the CohnReznick LLP New York office, will serve as secretary and treasurer. Scarlott K. Mueller, MPH, RN, former vice president and chief nursing officer at North Florida Regional Medical Center, will serve as immediate past chair.
