VIDEO: Scalp-cooling device reduces chemotherapy-associated hair loss
SAN ANTONIO — A scalp-cooling system helped minimize hair loss among patients with breast cancer who underwent chemotherapy, according to study results presented at San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
“For any patient who is getting chemotherapy, losing hair is their number one concern,” researcher Jame Abraham, MD, director of the breast oncology program at Cleveland Clinic, told HemOnc Today.
Abraham and colleagues conducted a prospective, randomized trial to assess the efficacy and safety of the Orbis Paxman scalp-cooling system (Paxman) for reducing chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Results will be used to support an application for FDA clearance.
“If this gets FDA approval ... patients will have more choices, [and] then the doctors [will] need to figure out how it’s going to fit into their practice,” Abraham said. – by Kristie L. Kahl
