Steve Stadum has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Stadum, who has served as chief operating officer of Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute since 2010, will assume his new roles in July. He will succeed Myra Tanita, who retired in December after a 26-year career at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Stadum — whose parents both died of cancer — said his career path has been guided by more than professional decisions.
“It’s personal to me,” Stadum said in a press release. “It’s a privilege to work in a place where, although I’m not going to find the cure, I can help bring together those who can. It makes my life much more meaningful.”
Stadum will be responsible for all operational activities of the research center. He also will oversee relations between Fred Hutchinson and its Seattle Cancer Care Alliance partners, University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
“He’s fantastic at building organizations,” Gary Gilliland, MD, PhD, president and director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, said in the release. “He understands academics, he understands administration, and he knows how to put buildings up. I have the greatest respect for what he did at OHSU.”
