Fox Chase Cancer Center announces faculty appointments

Fox Chase Cancer Center announced several faculty appointments.

Allison Aggon, DO, has joined the department of surgical oncology with a focus on breast surgery.

Aggon previously served as breast surgeon at Crozer-Keystone Health System Delaware County, where she also served as medical director of the Center for Breast Health.

“We’re thrilled to bring Allison on board,” Richard J. Bleicher, MD, FACS, leader of the breast service line and director of the breast fellowship program at Fox Chase, said in a press release. “She is a very skilled surgeon, and we are lucky to have her on our team.”

Michael Jan Bartel, MD, joined the department of medicine as a gastroenterologist.

Bartel earned his medical degree at Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg in Germany. He completed his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and, in 2012, he joined the department of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, as a fellow. He completed an advanced endoscopy fellowship at the Mayo Clinic this year.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Bartel to Fox Chase and to the Department of Medicine,” David Weinberg, MD, MSc, chair of the department of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Fox Chase, said in a press release. “His experience and knowledge are a great asset, and we look forward to bringing him aboard.”

John Karanicolas , PhD, has been named an association professor in the molecular therapeutics program.

Karanicolas, a computational chemist, earned his PhD from Scripps Research Institute. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at University of Washington. He previously served as associate professor in the department of molecular biosciences and Center for Computational Biology at University of Kansas.

“Dr. Karanicolas is an accomplished and renowned scientist,” Wafik El-Deiry, MD, PhD, coleader of the molecular therapeutics program at Fox Chase and a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member, said in a press release. “His knowledge and experience in the field of chemical biology make him an important addition to both the scientific community here at Fox Chase and our Molecular Therapeutics Program.”
