A $1 million gift has established an endowed professorship in City of Hope’s women’s cancers program.
Joanne Mortimer, MD, director of City of Hope’s women’s cancers program and vice chair of the department of medical oncology and therapeutics research, has been named the institution’s first Baum family professor in women’s cancers. The professorship recognizes Mortimer’s significant contributions to developing an outstanding Women’s Cancers Program, and provides a foundation for her future research and treatment advances.
The gift came from Jim and Judy Baum. The Baums’ daughter, Lauren, underwent treatment for breast cancer at City of Hope. Jim Baum later underwent treatment there for a rare form of sarcoma.
“The Baum family is delighted to support Dr. Mortimer’s dedication to providing the best treatment and care for patients battling breast and gynecological cancers,” Jim Baum, retired president of Dwight C. Baum Investments in Pasadena, California, said in a press release. “Our family knows firsthand the outstanding, patient-focused care that each and every person receives at City of Hope.”
City of Hope is grateful to the Baum family’s generosity and their commitment to the institution’s clinical programs, according to Robert W. Stone, president and CEO of City of Hope.
“Thanks to the Baum family, City of Hope will continue pursuing critical, leading-edge research that allows us to deliver compassionate care and lifesaving treatments for women’s cancers,” Stone said in the release.
