Wistar Institute executive receives professorship

David B. Weiner, PhD, executive vice president of The Wistar Institute and director of The Wistar Institute Vaccine Center, has received the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust professorship for cancer research.

Weiner has contributed to achievements in DNA vaccine development with more than 30 years of research in tumor, immunology and vaccine creation.

He is part of multinational research teams working to design vaccines for emerging diseases and pandemics. He previously served as an FDA adviser for gene development.

The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust awards grants in three areas: medical research in cancer, heart disease and AIDS. It also provides financial aid for college students, as well as basic needs for children, families and the elderly.

“We believe so deeply in Wistar’s talented and ambitious investigators, like Dr. Weiner, as they push the frontiers of science making striking advances in cancer research,” Louise Haven, medical grant administrator at the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust, said in a press release.

The Wistar Institute has been a recipient of the W.W. Smit Charitable Trust for more than 30 years.

Smith Charitable Trust professorship for cancer research strengthens our institute by providing freedom and flexibility for Wistar scientists to pursue creative, out-of-the-box projects that catalyze discovery,” Dario C. Altieri, MD, president and CEO of The Wistar Institute and director of The Wistar Institute Cancer Center, said in the press release. “This support and investment in Wistar science is key to early-stage innovations and makes all the difference.”
