CHICAGO — Dawn L. Hershman, MD, MS, associate professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, reviews study results that identified comorbidities and lifestyle-related factors that can predict chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy risk at the ASCO Annual Meeting.

The researchers found that patients with diabetes demonstrated a twofold greater risk for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Further, obese patients were more likely to develop the toxicity, whereas patients who exercised regularly had a lower risk.

“This gives us clues into interventions that may be useful and have not been studied well in terms of the prevention of this side effect,” Hershman said.
