David J. McConkey, PhD, has been appointed director of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute.

The institute’s membership includes experts from Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute, and the school of medicine’s departments of radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences, surgery and pathology.

“We are thrilled to bring David on board,” William Nelson, MD, PhD, director of Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, said in a press release.  “He brings a wealth of knowledge about the biology of bladder and genitourinary cancers, and has proven leadership skills in a top-notch institution.”

McConkey previously served as director of urological research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is chair for translational medicine for Southwest Oncology Group’s genitourinary cancers committee, and he has helped set agendas for the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network’s clinical initiatives.

“I am firmly convinced that team science is the most rapid path to progress,” McConkey said in the press release. “I look forward to serving as the hub of an institutional and international community of researchers who share a commitment to advancing the scientific understanding of bladder cancer and improving its treatment.”

William Isaacs, PhD, professor of urology and oncology at Johns Hopkins, served as interim director of the Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute since its inception in May 2014.
