ASCO elects four members to board of directors

Four oncology leaders have been elected to ASCO’s board of directors.

The new members of the board of directors will begin 4-year terms in June.

Peter C. Adamson

  • Peter C. Adamson, MD, has been elected to a pediatric oncologist seat. Adamson is chair of the Children’s Oncology Group, president of the Children’s Oncology Group Foundation, and a professor of pediatrics and pharmacology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania.
  • Arti Hurria, MD, a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member, has been elected to an undesignated specialty seat. Hurria is director of the cancer and aging research program, co-leader of the cancer control and population sciences program, and associate professor of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope.

  • Maha H. A. Hussain, MD, FACP, FASCO, a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member, has been elected to an undesignated specialty seat. Hussain is the Cis-Maisel professor of oncology, and professor of medicine and urology at University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • Jaap Verweij, MD, PhD, has been elected to an international oncologist seat. Verweij is a medical oncologist and dean of the faculty of medicine at Erasmus University, as well as vice chair of the board of directors at Erasmus Medical Center.

  • Three other clinicians have been elected to serve 3-year terms on the ASCO nominating committee. They are:
  • Michael B. Atkins, MD, deputy director of Georgetown-Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, vice chair of the department of oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center, and director of the melanoma and cutaneous malignancy program of the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Network.
  • James N. Frame, MD, FACP, is medical director of Charleston Area Medical Center Cancer Center and clinical professor of medicine at Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University School of Medicine — Charleston Division.
  • Joseph A. Sparano, MD, FACP, is director of breast medical oncology and associate chair for clinical research in the department of oncology at Montefiore Medical Center, as well as associate director for clinical research at Albert Einstein Cancer Center and Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care.
