MD Anderson appoints orthopedic oncology department chair

Valerae O. Lewis, MD, has been named chair of the department of orthopedic oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Lewis, whose clinical focus is sarcoma, is recognized for her expertise in pelvic and limb surgery for adults and children.

Lewis has been a member of the MD Anderson faculty for 15 years. She led the institutions orthopedic oncology efforts since 2006, starting as section chief ad interim and then as section chief. She served as department chair ad interim since September 2014. Under her leadership, the department expanded from two to six faculty members.

“I am thrilled and excited to be starting this new role as chair of the department of orthopaedic oncology,” Lewis said in a press release. “I am fortunate to have an incredible faculty and staff with whom to collaborate and achieve … MD Anderson’s mission.”

Lewis also serves on the orthopedic faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, as well as Baylor College of Medicine. She became president of the Western Orthopaedic Association in 2013, and she previously served on the board of directors for the American Orthopaedic Association and Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.

“Dr. Lewis has an outstanding track record of strong leadership within her department and within her professional field,” Ethan Dmitrovsky, MD, provost and executive vice president at MD Anderson, said in a press release. “We are confident that in her new role, she will work closely with our orthopaedic oncology faculty to build further on their impressive foundation of excellence.”
