Jaffee — a pioneer in the field of vaccine therapy for pancreatic cancer and an internationally-recognized leader in immunology research — succeeds Stephen Baylin, MD, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig professor for cancer research, who served as deputy director of the cancer center for a decade.

In her new role, Jaffee will help oversee strategic planning, clinical research, facilities planning and support for basic scientific discovery.

The search for a new deputy director focused on candidates who were accomplished physician–scientists with patient care experience and a dedication to mentoring young investigators, according to William G. Nelson, MD, PhD, director of the Kimmel Cancer Center.

“I am so pleased Liz has accepted the position. Her longstanding research on the development of vaccines to treat pancreatic cancer has led to significant advances in the field of immunology and personalized cancer medicine, and she has done all of this will also taking on numerous responsibilities in leadership,” Nelson said in a press release.
