The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses recently presented its 2014 APHON Membership Awards, which recognize members who demonstrate outstanding achievement in their field.

  • Susie Burke, MA, RN, CPNP, CPHON, a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Medical College of Wisconsin/Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and Stacey Crane, MSN, CCRP, CPON, a doctoral student at Indiana University School of Nursing, received APHON Counts Writing Awards. The award recognizes contributing authors of the association’s newsletter.
  • Debbie Lafond, CPNP, CPON, nurse practitioner and clinical coordinator at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, received the Dr. Patricia Green Leadership Award. The award recognizes a member who demonstrated excellence in service to and leadership of the association.
  • MaryEliza McEachen, BSN, RN, CPON, clinical nurse IV at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, received the Jean Fergusson Excellence in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing Practice Award. The award recognizes a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse for compassion and expertise in clinical nursing practice, as well as for incorporating research and new ideas into clinical practice.
  • Colleen Nixon, MSN, RN, CPHON, clinical educator at Children’s Hospital Boston, received the Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Instructor of the Year Award. The award recognizes an instructor who positively affects the students they teach and the patients and families they serve by demonstrating leadership and excellence in the classroom.
  • Deborah Robinson, DNP, APRN, BC, PNP, CPON, advanced practice nurse at Saint Louis Children’s Hospital, received the Excellence in Evidence-Based Practice Award. The award recognizes an association member who demonstrated high-quality contributions to evidence-based practice in the nursing care of children and their families in the area of hematology/oncology nursing practice.
  • Rebecca Rusch, MSN, RN, APNP, pediatric nurse practitioner at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, received the APHON Writing Award. The award recognizes a member who is a first-time author of a manuscript accepted for publication in Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing (JOPON).
  • Sheila Judge Santacroce, PhD, RN, CPNP, FAANP, association professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, received the Dianne Fochtman New Author Award. The award recognizes a member who is a first-time author of a manuscript accepted for publication in JOPON and for whom this is the first or second time a manuscript has been published.
  • Jennifer Stahlecker, MSN, RN, CPNP, CPHON, a hematology/oncology/BMT staff nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, received the APHON Counts My Most Memorable Case Award. My Most Memorable Case articles, published in the quarterly APOHON Counts newsletter, share personal stories from association members and the life lessons their patients have taught them.
