Susan T. Mayne, PhD, professor of epidemiology and associate director for population sciences at Yale Cancer Center, has been named center director for The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA.

The FDA center promotes and protects the public’s health by ensuring that the nation’s food supply is safe, sanitary and honestly labeled, and that cosmetic products are safe and properly labeled. The center has more than 800 employees and a budget of about $300 million, more than one-third of which funds research.

Mayne, who also is chair of the department of chronic disease epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, directed Yale Cancer Center’s cancer prevention and control research program from 1993 to 2010.
