In his new roles, he will initiate clinical trials for patients with breast cancer, and he will work with faculty and staff to create integrative programs that seek to improve the quality of life for breast cancer survivors. He also will help to build and expand survival programs and resources that Mount Sinai offers patients with breast cancer.

“By integrating clinical, translational and basic scientific researchers into collaborative teams, we will hasten the discovery of new knowledge to create novel approaches to treat and prevent breast cancer,” Shapiro said in the press release.

Shapiro previously served as section chief of breast cancer, breast research program leader and director of breast medical oncology at Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Shapiro’s research focuses on the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy on bone loss in premenopausal women; profiling of triple-negative breast cancers to define subsets that have better or worse prognosis; and preclinical evaluations of novel drugs.

“As a nationally recognized leader in breast medical oncology and research, Dr. Shapiro will help pave the way for the Mount Sinai Health System's innovation in breast cancer treatment and care,” Elisa Port, MD, chief of breast surgery and co-director of the Dubin Breast Center, said in a press release.
