American Thyroid Association elects board members

The American Thyroid Association installed new board members during its 84th annual meeting in Coronado, Calif.

Robert C. Smallridge, MD, will serve as president. Smallridge is professor of medicine and former chair of the endocrinology division at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. He is deputy director of Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and he is the Alfred D. and Audrey M. Petersen professor in cancer research. Smallridge served as treasurer of the association from 1988 to 1993, and as chair of the Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Guidelines Task Force from 2009 to 2012.

Antonio Bianco, MD, PhD, will serve as president-elect. Bianco is the Charles A. Weaver professor of medicine, executive vice-chairman of the department of medicine, and chief of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Victor J. Bernet, MD, chair of the division of endocrinology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., will serve as secretary and COO-elect.

The association also added three other members to its board of directors. They are: Julie Ann Sosa, MD, professor of surgery and medicine (oncology) at Duke University, where she serves as the leader of the Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group at Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Clinical Research Institute; Christine Spitzweg, MD, professor of medicine and endocrinology in the department of internal medicine at Ludwigs-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany; and M. Regina Castro, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and consultant in endocrinology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
