Institute of Medicine elects 70 new members

The Institute of Medicine elected 70 new members during its annual meeting on Oct. 20.

Election to the IOM, considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. The new members raise IOM’s active membership to 1,798. An additional 86 members hold emeritus status.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome our esteemed colleagues to the Institute of Medicine,” Victor J. Dzau, MD, president of IOM, said in a press release. “These leaders’ tremendous achievements have contributed significantly to advancing health and medicine. The expertise and knowledge they bring to the IOM will encourage and enhance its success.”

Newly elected members from the fields of hematology and oncology are Rafi Ahmed, PhD, professor in the department of microbiology and immunology, and director of the Emory Vaccine Center at Emory University School of Medicine; Robert A. Aronowitz, MD, professor and chair in the department of history and sociology of science at University of Pennsylvania; José Baselga, MD, PhD, physician-in-chief and chief medical officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Carol R. Bradford, MD, chair of the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at University of Michigan Health System; and Lewis Clayton Cantley, PhD, director of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Also, E. Antonio Chiocca, MD, PhD, FAANS, surgical director at the Center for Neuro-oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; James E. Crowe Jr., MD, director of Vanderbilt Vaccine Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center; James Economou, MD, PhD, vice chancellor for research at University of California, Los Angeles; Todd R. Golub, MD, investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; and Gerard Karsenty, MD, PhD, chairman of the department of genetics and development at Columbia University.

Also, Paul A. Khavari, MD, PhD, chairman of the department of dermatology at Stanford University; Guillermina “Gigi” Lozano, PhD, chair of the department of genetics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; David R. Piwnica-Worms, MD, PhD, chairman of the department of cancer systems imaging and deputy head of the division of diagnostic imaging at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Margaret A. Shipp, MD, chief of the division of hematologic neoplasia at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; Bruce M. Spiegelman, PhD, professor of cell biology and medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School; and Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, cancer research chair, professor of surgery and pharmacology, and director of the University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center.
