Beverly J. Lange, MD, a physician and researcher at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for more than 40 years, received the 2014 Distinguished Career Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

The award, which recognizes Lange’s lifetime contributions to the care of children with cancer, is presented to professionals whose career has had a major impact on the subspecialty through the combination of research, education, patient care and advocacy.

Lange joined CHOP’s division of oncology in 1976, retiring in 2013 as senior physician and director of clinical affairs. She also held the Yetta Deitch Novotny chair in pediatric oncology, and she was a professor of pediatrics in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She continues to volunteer in CHOP’s Division of Oncology.

Lange’s clinical work includes groundbreaking investigations of pediatric leukemia, including trials designed to discover optimum combination treatments for acute myeloid leukemia. Her efforts also have led to advances in treatment of high-risk forms of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
