Hematology/oncology is a challenging and sometimes discouraging specialty, given the potential for poor outcomes even with optimal treatment. As physicians on the front lines of the battle against one of America’s most preventable causes of death, they are also indispensable, particularly as the population ages.
Between 2016 and 2017, hematologists/medical oncologists saw a 6.7% increase in median salary, which rose from $416,738 to $444,766. Based on these data, HemOnc Today presents a list of the median starting salaries for new and experienced physicians in the field of hematology/oncology, based on a 2017 report issued by AMGA, formerly, American Medical Group Association. In some subspecialties and levels of experience, no data were available.
1. Neurological Surgery — Experienced Physicians
Although neurological surgeons are not strictly a hematology/oncology specialty, these clinicians may play a role in addressing tumors. The AMGA report for 2016 lists an experienced neurological surgeon’s median annual starting salary at $697,500.
2. Radiology/Anesthesiology — New and Experienced Physicians
Likewise, physicians who specialize in radiology are not specifically dedicated to hematology/oncology, but may play a role in diagnosis and/or treatment plans through radiologic findings. The median starting salary of a new physician in the field of non-interventional radiology was $450,000 compared with $420,000 among experienced physicians. For experienced physicians in interventional radiology, the median starting salary was $460,000. In the field of radiation therapy, the median annual starting salary for experienced physicians in 2016 was $473,875.
3. Hematology & Medical Oncology — Experienced and New Physicians
According to the report, the median starting salary for an experienced hematologist/medical oncologist is $390,000, while new physicians earned a median annual salary of $350,002.
4. Colon and Rectal Surgery — Experienced Physicians
Although a colon and rectal surgeon is not a hematology/oncology specialty, these surgeons may play a role in the resection of cancers of the colon or rectum. The AMGA report lists the 2016 experienced physician starting salary for these doctors at $385,000.
5. Pathology —Experienced Physicians
In 2016, the median annual starting salary for an experienced clinical pathologist was $222,497.
