Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and UW Medicine recently announced that UW physician William P. Hammond, MD, will join the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance oncology program based on UW Medicine’s Northwest Hospital & Medical Center campus.

Hammond will be responsible for developing the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance practice of general hematology and medical oncology as well as establishing a clinical training program for fellow and residents at Northwest Hospital.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Hammond join our team to help further advance our practices at Northwest Hospital and to mentor young physicians within the medical and radiation oncology program,” Fred R. Appelbaum, MD, executive director of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said in a press release. “Hammond has extraordinary experience treating patients and will be a valuable asset to our team at Northwest Hospital.”

Hammond has extensive experience mentoring young physicians in his previous work at the University of Washington in the division of hematology from 1978 until 1997, where he rose to the rank of associate professor.

During his earlier faculty tenure, Hammond also served as chair of the hematology course for second year medical students and was one of the early developers of the ‘problem-based learning’ curriculum for second year students at the School of Medicine. Hammond later served as director of medical education at Providence Seattle Medical Center where he was responsible for student teaching programs, the organization of CME programs and the supervision of residents in the department of medicine and fellows in the division of hematology.
