Samuel M. Silver, MD, PhD, has been elected chairman of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s board of directors.

Silver, a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member, is assistant dean for research and professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Silver, who specializes in hematology, was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians for 2013. He has held several leadership positions within NCCN and previously served as vice chairman of the board of directors.

“This is an exciting time for the NCCN,” Silver said in a press release. “The board has just approved an extensive strategic plan, and over the next few years, we are planning many projects, including electronic point-of-service deployment of the NCCN Guidelines, the introduction of enhanced oncology pathways, and enlarging our influence in coverage and public policy.”

Silver succeeds Thomas A. D’Amico, MD, of Duke Cancer Institute, who served as chairman of the board of directors since 2010. Timothy J.
Eberlein, MD, of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, has been elected as the board’s new vice chairman.
