“We are in the midst of evolutionary times, and our members need to be prepared for the changes coming with health care reform,” Alvarez said in a press release. “Our members need to feel empowered to be the best providers of high-quality, cost-effective prevention and treatment to women at risk for or diagnosed with gynecologic cancer.”

Alvarez, professor and director of the division of gynecologic oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, received his bachelor’s degree in zoology from Louisiana State University and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center.

He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as a fellowship in gynecologic oncology, both at UAB. His research interest included the development of novel therapeutics for ovarian cancer, and new screening and prevention strategies for cervical cancer.
