BC Cancer Agency appoints president

Max J. Coppes
Max J. Coppes, MD, PhD, MBA, has been named the new president of the BC Cancer Agency.
The agency is responsible for all aspects of cancer control — including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and research — in British Columbia, Canada. The agency has 2,400 employees at six sites, and it has research centers in Vancouver and Victoria.
The appointment is effective Sept. 1.
Coppes, HemOnc Today’s childhood cancers section editor, also will have an academic appointment with the University of British Columbia faculty of medicine.
Coppes currently serves as senior vice president of Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, where he led the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. He also is a professor of oncology, medicine and pediatrics at Georgetown University School of Medicine, clinical professor of pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Center, and adjunct investigator at the Pediatric Oncology Branch at the NCI.
Coppes previously served as director of children’s cancer programs at Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Alberta Children’s Hospital, both in Canada, as well as a professor of oncology and pediatrics at University of Calgary.
