The OVA1 blood test, a presurgical test to help assess whether an ovarian mass is malignant, is now available nationally and will be covered by Highmark Medicare Services.

The OVA1 test (Vermillion) is a protein-based in vitro diagnostic test that uses five biomarkers — prealbumin, apolipoprotein A-1, beta2-microglobulin, transferrin, and CA-125 — and proprietary software to produce a numeric result to help physicians determine whether a mass if malignant.

The test is indicated for women:

  • Older than 18 years.
  • With an ovarian mass for which surgery is planned.
  • Who have not yet been referred to an oncologist.

The test is meant to be used in addition to a physician’s independent clinical and radiological evaluation, and is not a screening test.
