All the TVs in the hospital have been fixed on the devastation in Haiti. Millions homeless, and likely thousands dead and injured. When I sit quietly I keep imaging what it is like to hear the survivors screams, but not be able to help them. It's hard to make my living in health care and not think about the injured and suffering buried or without any resources which we have such ready access to to alleviate their pain. One post says the destruction and pain from this earthquake is likely to be worse than the aftermath of Katrina. Another post reported that Doctors Without Borders lost all three Port-au-Prince hospitals from the hurricane, leaving them with at best "first aid care" only for people with severe injuries and pain.

The scope of the suffering and chaos seems almost too broad to understand, and too big to believe (as much as we hope this isn't really happening and it's all just a terrible nightmare), and throws into sudden perspective all the minor things that take up so much of our time. Praying seems utterly inadequate. So, what else can you do?

Here are few ideas:

  • Text "HAITI" to "90999" to donate $10 to the Red Cross.
  • Text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to Yele Haiti.
  • Donate to Partners in Health.
  • Donate to Architecture for Humanity.
  • Donate to charity:water.
  • Learn more about Haiti.

I'm sorry for the off-topic post, but this terrible human tragedy seems too huge to not comment on, even if it is not directly related to oncology.
