52nd ASTRO Annual Meeting

SAN DIEGO — Stereotactic radiation was safe and effective for the treatment of patients with operable early-stage non-small cell lung cancer and was a noninvasive alternative to surgery with less adverse effects, according to the findings of a phase 2 study.

“We can now confirm with more confidence that stereotactic body radiation therapy is an effective treatment alternative for aged patients with early NSCLC, Yasushi Nagata, MD, professor and radiation oncologist at Hiroshima University in Hiroshima, Japan, said in a press release. “In the future, there is a possibility that radiation will be a substitute for surgery in selected patients with stage I NSCLC. I encourage patients with early lung cancer to talk to their doctors to understand all their treatment options.”
